At the Bearskin Lodge it’s an honor for us to share with guests the story of how we came to be. You see, our hotel isn’t just another hotel but instead it’s a home away from home that stands on a foundation of beautiful roots here in the Smokies. That’s why we wanted to share with you 3 things that you might now know about us. We hope that you’ll find yourself inspired and intrigued by the few facts we share. The next time you’re town, we do hope that you’ll choose to experience our southern Appalachian hospitality firsthand!
In 2020 we will be celebrating 20 years of welcoming guests at our property in downtown Gatlinburg. We have families that have returned year after year and we are excited to meet each new guest as they arrive! The 20th Anniversary year is one that we are greatly looking forward to and preparing plenty of celebratory perks for. It would be an honor to have you celebrate with us!
20 years is certainly a reason to celebrate but the story of the Bearskin Lodge goes back much further! It all began with our owners grandmother, Hattie Ogle McGiffin. A Smokies resident that was born in 1898. Hattie was possibly one of the most hardworking residents in the history of Gatlinburg and she was certainly ahead of her time when it came to being an entrepreneur. In the early 1940’s she recognized a need for overnight accommodations in Gatlinburg as more and more people fell in love with the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. She started out by opening the Bearskin Tourist Home that consisted of a house and seven cottages that she built on family property. The demand grew and The Bearskin Motel was created. In place of the first Bearskin Tourist Home, Hattie built the 15-room motel that was complete with a bear shaped swimming pool. Guests that came to Gatlinburg loved the authentic, warm and welcoming hospitality that Hattie always provided and so her business continued to grow and expand. However, in true business fashion, Hattie decided that parking was needed the most and so in the late 1980’s The Bearskin Motel was replaced with the current Bearskin Parking Garage. In 1997 the Ogle family decided to purchase the land where Bearskin Lodge sits today and to create the current hotel. When designing the property their main intention was to create a place like the one where they once played at and stayed at. They wanted to provide today’s guests with the same love, friendliness and hospitality that their grandmother was known for so many years ago in their home of Gatlinburg. They wanted to pay homage to not only their family but to one of the pioneers of hospitality in the Smokies.
