March is a unique time in the Smoky Mountains. The weather is starting to warm back up, but a last snow storm is possible. Visitors can enjoy all kinds of St. Patrick Day events if you’re in town then, and you may spot wildflowers starting to bloom in mid to the end of March. But what are the absolute best activities to enjoy during this month? We want to share the top 5 things to do in Gatlinburg in March with you:
Although the weather starts to get warmer in March, it probably doesn’t until the middle of the month. So what do you do while it’s still a little chilly? You enjoy the snow sports at Ober Mountain! This ski resort has several ski and snowboarding runs on the mountain for people of all skill levels to enjoy. You can even take classes if you’ve never been on slopes before! Ober also has snow tubing until the end of the month, as well as a snow play area kids will love!
If you just so happen to be in town on March 17, then you may want to enjoy the day by visiting a pub or two! There are several in Gatlinburg, but some of our top spots include The Rampant Lion, The Fox and Parrot Tavern, and Boudicca’s Celtic Pub. Any of these restaurants will be a great place to spend the holiday enjoying drinks and food you won’t find anywhere else in town! Plus, most of them offer unique specials on the holiday!
The pubs aren’t the only places that celebrate St. Patty’s Day and have fun things to do in Gatlinburg in March! Gatlinburg SkyLift Park also turns green for the holiday with their Get Lucky event. You can celebrate the holiday the entire month of March. The SkyBridge is decked out in bright green lights with a beautiful light tunnel in the center, as well as dangling, twinkling shamrocks hanging from the bridge. In addition to the fun decor, you can grab a drink at the bar in the SkyCenter, take a walk on the SkyTrail, and just enjoy the views from the SkyDeck!
Another thing to do in Gatlinburg in March is take in the first wildflowers of the season! March is when vegetation starts to bloom in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and you have a ton of options of where to go. Some of the best wildflower hikes near Gatlinburg include Laurel Falls (which also has a huge 80-foot-tall waterfall at the end), Porters Creek Trail, and Little River Trail. Most of the blooms won’t start until mid to late March, so if you’re in town during this time, it’s perfect for seeing the flowers!
The national park isn’t the only place you can appreciate the wildflowers and warmer weather. Anakeesta has gorgeous gardens that will start to bloom during March, and you won’t want to miss them! You’ll also be able to enjoy Astra Lumina, an incredible and unique light show that’s unlike anything else you’ve ever seen. Of course, all the other exciting attractions Anakeesta has are available, like shopping, restaurants, ziplines, a mountain coaster, and more.
